Internship Information

Internships are more competitive than they’ve ever been. More people graduate college looking for those positions these days, as many people enter the workforce considering technical knowledge that wasn’t taught in school, or seeking experience in an area that they will specialize in someday. But while you’re up against tens of thousands of other college seniors or graduates, you are also up against more experienced professionals. The job market is difficult and unemployment rates are high, which means more people considering a career change to jumpstart their job hunt, and more people willing to accept a low-paid or free internship to help motivate that change. Since there are so many other applicants for every position, you’ll want to do everything you can to make your resume stand out. So put yourself in the position of the internship hiring manager.

Your motivation is earning experience and helping increase your chances of landing a job after graduation. But the company hiring interns expects them to bring value, and get actual work done. If you come in with very little to offer, the position won’t be yours for long. That means you must learn as many programs and apps as possible that will be a part of your internship before you get started. Show some aptitude at the computer, get work done faster and better than anyone else, and maybe your internship will even turn into a full time job after a while. To help you on your way, consider these apps and programs you should be comfortable with before applying for internships.

As with many other things in the computing world, Google leads the way in online applications. And Google Docs may be their most important offering for potential interns. It’s free for all users, and allows you to create documents that you can share with other users. Everyone can add changes or view new drafts, and talk about them as they happen. It’s becoming an omnipresent tool in business, and chances are you’ll come across it often in your internship. Use it to organize projects, and your boss will take notice.

If you’re in an internship that requires charts and diagrams, you could do well with Microsoft Office. But consider Lucidchart.com as an option. It’s a free app that’s incredibly easy to use, and will help you put together any sort of analysis chart or diagram you need. It’s also accessible from any computer, so you can start it at the office and work at night from your laptop, and you’ll be able to share your work in real time with other interns or your boss.

There are a couple of online programs you should consider if you’re looking for a job that involves transcription or content management. For blogging or CMS work, get yourself up to speed on WordPress. Many businesses use it for their web work, or at least for their blog. You’ll probably have to deal with it often, so speed up the learning curve and you’ll make a great impression. When it comes to transcription, check out ExpressScribe. It’s a quick way to transcribe from tape or another document, and is free for any user.

For graphic design, Adobe’s Creative Suite will be your first destination. You’ll come across it in marketing, advertising, entertainment, and a host of other fields, so learn InDesign for layout work and Photoshop for any photo editing. These aren’t free, so check with your school to see if there are copies for use at the computer lab, or take advantage of any student discounts available to get your copy. You won’t regret the purchase, and there are tons of videos available to walk you through these complex programs.

Finally, you’ll need a strong knowledge of Excel in any business environment. Any spreadsheet developed in the office will probably be on Excel, so take the time to get fast with its use. It will come up while studying for your GIS certificate, your accounting degree, or even for producing an independent film. So make sure you’re better than any of the other interns with this important program.
