Internship Information

Transitioning from the life you had in high school to the totally new experience of attending college is probably causing you to feel a mixture of excitement and terror. The rules as you knew them are about to change: you are more responsible for your education than you were in high school, you may be a long way from home, and you will probably arrive on campus without knowing a soul. Fortunately, if you do a little research on the schools you are thinking about attending, you will find that there is a club or some kind of activity for nearly everyone on campus. Joining a club is a fantastic way of meeting new people, making friends who share your similar interests, and enjoying the social aspect of college that is just as important as the academics you’ll study. Here are a few suggestions that will help you to be more involved:

Think about the hobbies or activities you currently enjoy. Are you into comic books? Working with animals? Do you keep a blog or online journal? Start brainstorming: write down a list of the interests that you have right now or that you think you might enjoy in the future. Follow up by checking out your prospective school’s website: are there any matches?

You might also begin thinking about different aspects of your personality, religious heritage, ethnicity, or other orientations you might possess. Are you a member of a minority group? Most campuses have a Black or African American Student Union, a club for Gay, Lesbian, or Bisexual Youth, or organizations tailored for people of different religious persuasions. Depending on your political affiliation, you may be interested in attending meetings of the College Democrats or Republicans.

If you are artistically inclined, you should scout out any clubs that allow you to draw, sketch, or paint. Perhaps you took a drama class in high school and think that you might enjoy a life in the theatre. Even though the proposition may be scary, you could try out for one of the school plays. You may just land the lead role! Or you might consider looking into the world of dance. Many schools offer ballroom dancing or include salsa clubs. You might discover an exciting opportunity to work with a troupe of fire dancers!

Checking the Student Life office is a wonderful place to start your hunt for the perfect club or social activity that will appeal most to you, as well as offering you the chance to be involved with like-minded people. Investigating the school website should lead you to the Student Life homepage (or the equivalent), where there may be online brochures that will give you an idea of what choices are available to you. You’ll want to make the most of your college years, and forge as many wonderful memories as you can – those four years will pass in a heartbeat. And who knows – maybe you’ll be able to turn your experience with these clubs into a career!
